FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

The only tripod I carry with me at all times.

Yes, I do carry a tripod with me. Why you ask. Well, you never know when you come across to a situation where the slightest movement can cause motion blur and need a camera tripod to capture your desired image.

The mobile tripod aka gorilla pod focus is solid and well made. I first used the gorillapod for my Nikkor D300s which is considered a semi professional camera with a Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8 lens with no issues.

For my first attempt using the gorilla pod, I used this tripod as a normal tripod for a camera.

Which means, I did not use the gorillapod to its maximum potential, which is to hang the gorillapod on tree trunks or hanging from a fence or a poll.

You can’t blame me though as it’s hard to trust a tripod to carry thousands of dollars worth of gear.

AFTER FIRST USE:

I can say now with the utmost confidence that the gorillapod focus can safely hold my camera setup on a fence, tree trunk and boom pole. The gorillapod focus is an amazing portable tripod that can support professional cameras up to 11 lbs. I’ve not only used my gorillapod focus for my pro camera but also my digital Video camcorder with no problem.

The gorillapod isn’t just a tripod in my arsenal but this tripod also functions as a pro camera stabilizer.

You can easily configure your gorillapod to work as a pro camera stabilizer by resting one of the legs to your body and hold the remaining two legs separately with each hand. Like I said the gorillapod is an amazing multipurpose product that not only supports your camera as a tripod but as a stabilizer.

A FEW OF THE FEATURES I FOUND MOST USEFUL FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS INCLUDE: (view a full listing at the manufacturer website)

  • Flexible, wrappable legs that allow you to secure equipment weighing up to 11 lbs to virtually any surface, enabling you to capture shots you never could before.
  • Machined Aluminum Sockets and high quality injection molded thermoplastic ensure snug joints that stay firm after lots of action
  • An included 3/8’ adapter screw allows you to mount both cameras and professional tripod heads.

You can find the full specs for the gorillapod focus here: Joby Specs

CONCLUSION:

If you are looking for a sturdy tripod small enough to carry with you at all times, then the joby gorillapod focus is for you. Remember that the gorillapod does not only function as a tripod but also as a camera stabilizer which is surely the selling point for me when I purchased my first gorillapod which was the gorillapod SLR-Zoom.

About the Author

Lawrence
As a weekend photographer, I found myself with limited time and limited resources in terms of expanding my photographic ability due to my career. Like many weekend photography warriors, there are only 2 hours on the weekdays and maybe 8 hours or so total on the weekend to learn and grow. These time constraints is what motivated me into creating this online photography resource. I needed a photography hub where all the information I referred to is stored in one easy to navigate online location. I see this more of my online repository of photography information gathered through time. I am very proud of the success of my blog offering of "Photographer Interview Series". You will read in-depth interviews from the photography world's famous photographers. Names like David Tejada, Nick Onken, Michael Grecco and David Bean to name a few. The interview series has also expanded to include weekend photographers and now wedding photographers with the similar goal of learning from each other. My goal is to evolve this site to be the premier go to resource for photographer interviews and equipment reviews.
