Review

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Let’s just say i was pleasantly surprised. From opening the box, and exposing a nice case which holds the Ikan 312, the two sonly L series batteries, dual battery charger, A/C Adapter, diffuser filter and 6″ articulating arm.

The iLED 312 felt well made and the bulbs when turned on were very bright. The iKAN iLED packed quite a punch for a small light source.

AFTER FIRST USE:

The iKan 312 came right in time before the WPPI convention in Las Vegas. WPPI stands for Wedding Portrait Professionals International.

So i was really able to put the iKAN iLED 312 to the test. I interviewed numerous vendors with the iKAN iLED 312 which served as the main light and at times an edge light.

During a few lighting setups i noticed that the specified brightness distance of 3 feet was accurate as i found myself trying to position the iKAN 312 more than the specified 3 feet distance and the light falloff didn’t provide the optimimal lighting condition.

When used as an edge light during my interviews, i found myself setting the iKAN iLED 312 on full power which lasted for about 2 hours. Yes, i used the stop watch feature on my iphone.  So with this information, i was able to accurately gauge how long i would be able to use the lights.

Since I had two iKAN iLED 312, i was able to switch the batteries when necessary which saved me on one occasion. Another plus with these lights is that they use the SONY L series DV batteries so if you own a Sony DV camera this is a big plus.

I was also stopped numerous times on the tradeshow floor of people wanted to take a picture of the iKAN iLED 312. It almost seemed like they’ve never seen an LED light used for video before. Which we know can’t be the case considering the boom in videography.

A FEW OF THE FEATURES I FOUND MOST USEFUL FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS  THAT SHOOT VIDEO INCLUDE: (view a full listing at the manufacturer website)

  • Accurate throw of about 3 feet
  • Wide Angle Beam Pattern
  • Variable Color Temperature
  • Built-in Dimmer
CONCLUSION:

If you are in the media, video blogger or a wedding videographer, then the iKAN iLED 312 is for you. The iKAN iLED 312 provide sufficient lighting for the functions of types of people above. I do recommend to purchase at least 2 of the iKAN iLED 312 to provide an interesting lighting setup for your interview, a video blog and or a wedding.
