For this post, I will detail all the settings and configuration to allow me to capture this conceptual image below for a local DJ name Dj Taek. He is known as a bedroom DJ so I saw it fitting for this concept of a turntable person laying in bed as moonlight hit him. To add a level of complexity to the image, the turntable lights and also a videophone on the end table will need to be exposed. This image would not be possible without the fake moonlight photography effect. This is a good example of photography effects that are subtle and realistic.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

-Indoors

-Ambient light coming from outside

-Ambient light from turntables

-Ambient light from the videophone

-Low white ceiling

LIGHTING SETUP:

1. FAKE MOONLIGHT MOUNTED ON WINDOW OPENING CAMERA RIGHT

  • Light Type:

i.     Artificial Flash

  • Light Output:

i.     1/64 power

  • Light Modifier

i.     None

  • Light Distance:

i.     Subject 4’

  • Purpose:

i.     To be used as a lite fill for the room photography effects.

2.    MAIN LIGHT

  • Light Type:

i.     Artificial Flash

  • Light Output:

i.     1/1

  • Light Modifier

i.     Gary Fong collapsible snoot and grid

ii.     Why:  this creates a light spotlight and the grid looks like the blinds to replicate the moon shining through blinds look. This is another example of how photography effects can subtle which in turn makes it believable.

  • Light Distance:

i.     Subject 6’5 feet

CAMERA SETTINGS:

  • ISO:

i.     100

ii.     Why: Reduce noise

  • Aperture:

i.     F16

ii.     Why: To ensure that most of the image is sharp and so you can see a kind of star shape when looking at the lights from the turntables

  • Shutter:

i.     5” which is 5 seconds

ii.     Why: So that the turntable lights and the video phone lights are visible

  • White Balance:

i.     Tungsten

ii.     Why: to cool down the image and give it that light blue to

CONCLUSION:

Yes, its that easy in 3 easy steps.

  1. Light for the environment and props.
  2. Spotlight the subject with a grid.
  3. Shoot at Tungsten WB to cool down the image and create that moonlight look photography effect.

I hope this was easy and helpful. Please let me know if there are any other effects you want for me to breakdown for easy replication.
