LOOKING AT RING ENGAGEMENT IMAGE DISSECTED

For this post, we will be dissecting the lighting setup of the engagement session self-portrait I took titled placement of the ring.

Below you may get a glimpse on how I “SEE LIGHT” and actually lit the image.  I hope that it provides you insight on how to see light for yourself.

 

Please not that the below details are an estimation based on how I see the light falloff from the subject

 

  • BACKGROUND LIGHT (PURPLE)
      1. Lighting Clues:  Soft outline on female shoulder camera right.
      2. Aperture: +2
      3. Location: Back camera right left concentration
      4. Distance: 3 feet from background
      5. Light Modifier: Grided strobe
  • HAIR LIGHT (RED)
        1. Lighting Clues:  Specular highlights on male and female hair top of head.
        2. Aperture: +2
        3. Location: 2 feet directly above models heads
        4. Distance: 2 feet from Subject
        5. Light Modifier: strobe with 6 inch reflector
      • EDGE LIGHT (BLUE)

  1. Lighting Clues:  Specular highlights on male camera right bangs and female camera right side near ear.
  2. Aperture: +2
  3. Location: Back camera right light concentration
  4. Distance: 4 feet from Subject
  5. Light Modifier: Strobe with 6 inch reflector
  • FILL LIGHT (YELLOW)
    1. Lighting Clues: No harsh shadows on couples clothing
    2. Aperture: -2
    3. Location: Directly in front of the couple
    4. Distance: 3 feet in front of the models and at eye level of couple
    5. Light Modifier: frosted ring light bulb
  • MAIN LIGHT (GREEN)
    1. Lighting Clues: Slightly harder shadows on males jacket opening
    2. Aperture: Base
    3. Location: Camera right 45 degrees
    4. Distance: 3-4 Feet horizontal and at eye level
    5. Light Modifier: Octobox

I also used 4 pocketwizard plus IIIs with the remote camera trigger cable to remotely fire the camera with my sekonic L-358 light meter with the pocketwizard module.
