The what lens filter should i purchase is another popular photography question among newbie photographers. Well like many of these photography equipment purchase questions, the answer is “it depends.” Just know the bigger the lens the more expensive the lens filter will be. Also, if you have nice glass usually worth more that $700, don’t go cheap on the lens filter. It just doesn’t make sense to buy a cheap filter to slap on an expensive photography lens. After a few weeks of research, I’ve become a fan of Hoya brand lens filters. These photography lens filters aren’t the very best which cost over $100-$200. The Hoya lens filters i’ve purchased were no more than $80 which is a good price for a good camera lens filter.

If you like to photograph outdoors and at shiny surfaces, I would purchase a polarizing filter like the Hoya 72mm Circularizing polarizing filter which i purchased for my Nikkor 18-200mm 3.5/5.6 VR

If you like to photograph outdoors in the bright sun, then I would invest in a neutral density filter like the one below. Again select the filter that fits the camera lens you will use more with this specific type of lens filter.

52MM (DMC) ULTRA-THIN DIGITAL MULTI-COATED PRO 1 ND-4 NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTER

Once you put one of these camera lens filters on, you will never go back. It’s great to protect your glass as well.

About the Author

Lawrence
As a weekend photographer, I found myself with limited time and limited resources in terms of expanding my photographic ability due to my career. Like many weekend photography warriors, there are only 2 hours on the weekdays and maybe 8 hours or so total on the weekend to learn and grow. These time constraints is what motivated me into creating this online photography resource. I needed a photography hub where all the information I referred to is stored in one easy to navigate online location. I see this more of my online repository of photography information gathered through time. I am very proud of the success of my blog offering of "Photographer Interview Series". You will read in-depth interviews from the photography world's famous photographers. Names like David Tejada, Nick Onken, Michael Grecco and David Bean to name a few. The interview series has also expanded to include weekend photographers and now wedding photographers with the similar goal of learning from each other. My goal is to evolve this site to be the premier go to resource for photographer interviews and equipment reviews.
